Five Spice Chicken Wings

This weekend was a very good weekend not just because of the Super Bowl but also because my sisters and their families came over and watched the game with us – it was fun. While I was grilling in the backyard, I could hear the continuous-loud cheers coming from the inside of the house. Why? Half of them were cheering for San Francisco and half for Baltimore. It wasn’t just a one-sided crowd and that’s what made it fun! The only time it became one-sided was when Beyonce performed during the half time. LOL!

It was a well played game by both teams. Which team was I rooting for? Well, since I live in the West Coast, I was leaning towards the 49ers BUT at the end, the Ravens played a better game and that made them the better team. Congratulations Baltimore!

As I mentioned, I was grilling while all the fun cheering was going on. I served Thai BBQ Ribs (recipe will be posted next time) and grilled chicken wings with Chinese five spice. You just need to marinate it in advance and cooking it is easy. It is really good stuff and perfect for events like the Super Bowl.

Grilled Chicken Wings with Chinese Five Spice

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 14 whole chicken wings
  2. 1/2 cup honey (for brushing)

  3. Marinade
  4. 1/2 cup soy sauce
  5. 1/2 cup honey
  6. 1 1/2 Tablespoon finely minced ginger
  7. 1 1/2 Tablespoon finely minced garlic
  8. 4 scallions or green onions - trimmed with white and green parts finely chopped.
  9. 2 teaspoon Chinese Five Spice powder

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut chicken wing tips and discard.
  2. Cut chicken in to two parts (drummetes & wingettes)
  3. Wash wings under running water, drain, then set aside.
  4. Place all the marinade ingredients in a large bowl.
  5. Mix with a whisk until fully combined.
  6. Transfer drained chicken wings to the marinade bowl.
  7. Mix until all wings are fully coated.
  8. Transfer wings and marinade in a large Ziploc bag.
  9. Refrigerate for 24 hours.

  10. Grilling the Wings
  11. Pre heat BBQ grill to high (about 450 degrees)
  12. Brush BBQ grates with vegetable oil.
  13. Place chicken wings on the grill.
  14. Cook wings for about 5 minutes on each sides or until no longer pink.
  15. Brush with reserved honey about 2 minutes before removing from the grill.
  16. Serve immediately.
  17. ENJOY!

Wow, these look very tasty! I like the addition of five spice and honey… makes the wings spicy and sticky! Too cold over here to fire up the grill, but will be sure to try it once the weather gets nicer. Can’t wait for the Thai BBQ ribs too… thanks! :)

Those perfectly grilled wings are making me hungry and I just had breakfast. Wonderful that you are grilling outdoors, it is snowing where I am and according to the weather forecast this is going to be an on and off snowy week, blah.

Wings are always great to grill — fast and easy. I’m sorry about the snow and I guess I shouldn’t be complaining when it gets a little chilly here. Thank you and stay warm, Norma! :)

I love cooking out on the grill all year around. Your delicious recipe gives me another excuse to spend some time out on the balcony with a nice glass of wine and BBQ tools while glazing and cooking my Asian wings on the grill. These sound finger licking good! Take care, BAM

  6. Wow, look at the perfect char on the wings! I am going to an Asian market tomorrow and grab wings! I hope the weather this weekend is nice so I can ask my husband to grill this. I can’t wait for BBQ season to come so I can marinade and ask him to cook dinner. :D I just bought a brand new five spice too. You saw me buying? Perfect timing! ;)

Oh Nami, I’m sure Shen wouldn’t mind cooking dinner for you and the kids. Just make sure you keep him company while he’s grilling. You know, it’s kinda boring out in the yard if your by yourself. :) Thank you for your comment, Nami. :)

Hi, Ray. These wings look absolutely fabulous! And you remind me I haven’t used 5 spices for ages. I love wings and am one of the rare people I know who like this cut (you would be surprised how few people in Europe like chicken wings!) and even though I have no grill, I love them baked in the oven until the thinest part is charred and I can bite the thin bone off… You have made me dream!

Well, like what I always say about wings and other food. If they don’t like wings, then good because there are more for us. LOL! Thank you, Sissi and have a great weekend! :)

Can a Super Bowl party exist without wings? I think not! These look wonderful – like the way you used the Chinese Five Spice powder. These must have tasted amazing. Just like the game! One of the better ones in recent history. Good stuff – thanks.

  10. I love five spice but have never thought of using it in a marinade. I’ll be making this come summer, when the grill comes out of winter storage.

  11. Ray, if I were at your family’s party, I would most likely joining you in the kitchen while the crowd cheering for their teams. Chinese Five Spice is a fantastic seasoning for all meat dishes, so this should be the winner of the game!:)
