Pork Chops with Banana Ketchup Glaze

One day my son was complaining about having zits. You know, typical teenager being very conscious about their look. I said to him “You should eat more bananas.” Then he asked me… “What’s banana have to do with having pimples?” I said. .. “Well, do you see monkeys having pimples?” :=P

Banana ketchup is  widely used as condiments in the Philippines and abroad by many Filipinos.  It pairs well with fried dishes like fried pork, fried fish, fried chicken, and fried rice.  Okay, I kinda like got carried away there on the fried things so, ahem I’m just… kidding about the fried rice.

I am using similar marinade that I always use for pork BBQ on skewers and use banana ketchup as glazing.  However, this time I am upgrading the glazing by modifying the banana ketchup and not using it right out of the bottle.   Well, I am getting hungry so “Kain na Tayo!”  That means “Let’s Eat” in Tagalog.

Pork Chops with Banana Ketchup Glaze

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 8 pcs 1/2 inch thick pork chops
  2. vegetable oil

  3. For the Marinade
  4. 1/2 cup Soy Sauce
  5. 1 cup 7-Up or Sprite Soda
  6. 2 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  7. 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  8. 6 cloves Garlic – finely minced
  9. 3 tablespoon Lemon Juice
  10. 3 Tablespoon Agave syrup

  11. Glaze
  12. 1 cup banana ketchup ( Oh I love it when words rhyme) :P
  13. 1 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
  14. 2 teaspoon sweet mirin
  15. 2 teaspoon sesame oil
  16. 2 1/2 Tablespoon Agave syrup
  17. 2 Tablespoon finely chopped green onions

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Combine marinade in a bowl.
  2. Add pork chops to the bowl then mix until fully coated.
  3. Transfer in a Ziploc bag and refrigerate for at least 6 hours.

  4. To Make the Sauce
  5. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl.
  6. Mix thoroughly with a whisk.
  7. Refrigerate until ready to use.

  8. Cooking the Pork Chops **
  9. Brush the grate with vegetable oil
  10. Heat the BBQ grill to about 400 degrees.
  11. Place the pork chops and grill one side for about 1 1/2 minute or until it's seared.
  12. Turn over the pork chops.
  13. Generously brush the seared side of the pork chops with Banana Ketchup sauce mix.
  14. Grill the other side for about 1 minute or until it's seared.
  15. Turn over the pork chops again.
  16. This time brush the other seared side of the pork chops.
  17. Repeat the process for few more times until pork chops are done; generously brushing pork chops with the sauce on each turn.

  18. Serve immediately.
  19. ENJOY!

Cooking Notes

** To avoid contamination, do not brush sauce on raw meat.

Ray, I am never disappointed when I see a new recipe from you in my Google reader! Even as a personal chef I tend to stick to the more mainstream ethnic dishes, only because it’s important that I’m familiar with the ingredients I’m cooking with. Let’s just say I never would have picked up a bottle of Banana Ketchup and known what to do with it! There’s a great asian market near me and I’m swinging in later today to keep some on hand. Can’t wait to try it with the family this weekend!

Banana ketchup is sweeter than regular tomato ketchup and it’s an adaptive taste for most people. Thank you, Purabi! :)

Your answer is hilarious! On the other hand bananas are very healthy.
This glazed pork looks gorgeous (you know how much I love pork!) and now that I see banana ketchup on your blog for umpteenth time I am desperate to get it! We don’t have Filipino grocers, but there are some multi-ethnic shops selling products from all around the world so I will go and check there. It is so intriguing!

I always have fun with my son and my buddy. Banana ketchup is exported to countries where there is a large population of Filipinos living abroad. I hope you find one. Thank you for your comment, Sissi! :)

I’ll tell you what Ray – you really know how to cook a pork chop! These looks DELICIOUS! Love the marinade and the glaze! I’ve never had banana ketchup but I will be keeping an eye out for it. Not because I have pimples but because it sounds quite interesting. :)

      Hi Bam,

If you are asking to make the it from scratch… I wouldn’t know because I haven’t even tried. I always use bottled ones and I just modify it. Banana ketchup is probably something local stores import from the Philippines.

  20. Yes! Me too, I only use banana ketchup for my pork bbq marinade! banana ketchup lends for a sweeter, more rounded taste than tomato ketchup! But you know what else I discovered? I like bbq marinades with Orange Crush soda (I once used a French orange sparkling drink) as an alternative to 7-Up, hehe! These chops are killer! Will definitely bookmark this recipe as well!
