I am very excited and proud to have a good friend cooking with us today. I’m sure most of you know her. She is Nami of Just One Cookbook. This young lady never ceases to amaze not only me, but I’m sure most of you who have been following her blog. Her delicious Japanese cooking, her simple and yet elegant presentation of the dishes, and the photography that is just Ahh-mazing! Let us all welcome Nami of Just One Cookbook.

Hi everyone! My name is Nami and I share quick and easy Japanese recipes at Just One Cookbook. You might remember my blog when Ray shared his delicious Stir Fried Shrimp & Asparagus in Black Bean Sauce recipe back in April.

I’m so excited to be here today because Ray’s blog is super popular and I am really honored that he would let me share my recipe with his readers! Thanks Ray!

Today I would love to share my family’s favorite pork belly recipe because I noticed that similar to the Japanese, Filipinos also love using pork belly as an ingredient in their cuisine. This juicy flavorful meat is a wonderful contribution to the meal and surely we can’t get enough of it.

This particular recipe is a very easy one and I highly recommend you to give it a try because it’s simply DELICIOUS! It’s a perfect dish for a busy weeknight. I usually serve it as donburi style (rice bowl) and make a simple miso soup to compliment the rice dish. The whole meal can be prepared in less than 30 minutes and cleanup is easy! I hope you will enjoy it!

Honey Pork Belly

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Yield 2 Servings

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 3/4 lb (350g) pork belly
  2. Oil
  3. Blanched spinach (optional)
  4. Japanese mayonnaise (optional)
  5. Ichimi Togarashi (optional)
  6. Seasonings
  7. 2 Tbsp. honey
  8. 2 Tbsp. soy sauce
  9. 1 Tbsp. oyster sauce
  10. 2 garlic cloves

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Slice pork belly into 1/4 inch (6-7mm) pieces.

  2. Grate garlic cloves (or you can use a garlic press).

  3. Heat oil in a large frying pan and start cooking pork belly on high heat when the frying pan is hot.

  4. The oil might splatter so you can use a splatter screen to avoid mess in your kitchen.

  5. When both side of pork belly is nicely browned, turn off the heat.

  6. Wipe off the excess oil completely.

  7. Turn the heat back on to medium heat and add Seasonings.

  8. Cook over medium heat until the meat start to have nice glaze. Try not to burn the sauce.

  9. Enjoy the juicy flavorful meat with blanched spinach to balance out the palate. Our family’s favorite way of eating Honey Pork Belly is to make a donburi style (rice bowl). Place blanched spinach over a bowl of rice. Lay pieces of pork belly on top and drizzle Japanese mayonnaise with sprinkle of Ichimi Togarashi. The mayonnaise goes amazingly well with the salty sweet sauce.

  10. ENJOY!

Two of my favorite people and bloggers on one post! :) Hi Ray and Nami!!

Fantastic supporting/directional images. Now the Japanese mayo, is that something easy to find or is that something homemade? Serving this with brown or white rice with some steamed bok choy…YUM! Thanks for sharing this Nami!

Thanks Ray for featuring Just One Cookbook! You two have a great weekend…

    • Thank you Cristina! Japanese mayo is easy to find if you live close to a Japanese/Chinese (or Asian) market. If you click on the link, it shows you the example of Japanese mayo and also how to make Japanese mayo using American mayo (although it’s not perfectly same).

Wow, this is really gorgeous–perfectly lacquered! Pork belly is so sumptuous and full of flavor that I think some greens and a little bit of rice are the perfect accompaniments to cut through the fattiness of it.

  6. Wowza! This is absolutely so delish! This reminds me of our own “lechon kawali”. Like I told Nami on her site, I am drawn to anything that has “pork belly” on the recipe title. Thanks for sharing this guest post. I must try this soon. BTW, can I use pork shoulder instead? That’s what I currently have in the freezer.

    • I know, I remember drooling over over your pork belly recipe. :-) I have never used pork shoulder. As long as it’s fatty, I think it’ll work. But I can’g guaranteed since I’ve never tried it before…

Ray, thanks for having Nami as your guest blogger today. =)

Nami – this looks absolutely delicious! I love that it’s so easy to make too. =D when you say it’s yields two servings, is that for two adults?

    Thanks.

    Reply
    • Yes I meant two adults. Because it’s fatty part of the meat, I think it’s too much for one person. What you see in the pan is the actual amount. Well, some people might finish the entire meat, but I think for healthy eating reason, 2 servings is perfect. Balance out with some veggies. :-)

As I live in SF, I get almost everything here (besides some specialized or minor stuff). I’ll do my best to share some recipes that are easy for everyone to cook. :-)

It looks like my comment has gone into moderation space as I KNOW that I commented on this post almost as soon as it appeared. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to this one.

Congratulations on the guest post. It’s great that a new audience will be able to be exposed to your tasty dishes.

As I said in my original comment, my father used to buy this cut to smoke it and then eat it like bacon but the addition of honey makes it appealing to more sophisticated palates. Although I don’t have any pork belly on hand, I’ve made my own Chinese style barbecued pork and, inspired by your post, used it on a donburi.

    And later in summer rolls.
